The Salomon BBR has landed

Salomon have released their all new ski the BBR on the the UK market for winter 2011-12 and it is causing as much confusion as excitement amongst consumers. With it's radical new shape, which is very surf board inspired, and bright blue colour scheme we are already seeing people drawn to it in the ski racks at sail and ski in both our shops but more often than not the look of initial excitement at seeing such a wild looking ski then quickly turns to a look of confusion as to how the ski is for. Let me try an enlighten you from my own experiences with both the Salomon BBR 8.9 and the 7.9

Every March we take 10 of us away to Italy (Austria from 2012) to the SIGB ski test and get to ski everything on the market. Nice work if you can get it. The beauty of our test team is that it is not simply 10 awesome skiers but a complete mix of abilities for recreational to very advanced allowing us to get a great cross section of opinion on all of the skis. in the case of the BBR this test group was perfect

The Concept of the Salomon BBR

Actually quite simple really, A very wide nose gives float in powder, a normal 79mm or 89mm waist width keeps the ski versatile enough to ski all over the mountain, and the narrow tail allows the rear end of the ski to sink in deep snow giving the tip more lift but also allows the tail to be maneuverable under the snow as it is not pushing against a great amount resistance. Off-piste you have a ski that want to allow the tip to the surface and is very maneuverable in deep snow at lower speeds but it has allowed you to ski the groomers to get to your powder stash without being a really wide difficult to ski 110mm or more wide ski. The only other thing we noticed about the skis ability on piste is that as the tail is narrower than the tip by a big amount beginner to intermediates get on with it well as you can easily lean a bit further back and slide the tails of the ski around a bit more

The Salomon BBR 8.9 skis

My personal pick of the two but I am quite used to stiffer skis in the 90-100mm wide territory. Would suit all skiers from strong intermediate upwards and would be the one to go for if you are looking to a lot of off piste skiing

The Salomon BBR 7.9 skis

Officially the intermediate version of the BBR but we found that it really appealed to the women as well who don't need the same width as a bigger man or to the intermediate who wanted a ski with a "talking point" that is very forgiving and will allow for easy learning in the powder down the sides of the piste

For me the answer was yes, but it would be the 8.9 and half our test team agreed with this. A couple preferred the 7.9 for reasons explained above and a couple simply didn't like them. But hey, if we all liked the same stuff the world (and the mountain) would be a very boring place

2012 happenings and new stock arriving

Well, It has been a while since our last post, a sign of us all having to work hard in these uncertain economic times i suppose!!

So, whats been happening? A lot would be the appropriate answer. New warehouse, new jobs for people within the company, new stock control system and a new look for the website. The Warehouse is now our operating hub taking the stress out of the office and shops and certain staff now have defintive roles in the company such as Ben who is now our E-commerce Manger and Alex who takes over as head of Customer Service.

The website is starting to look really good with a lot of input from Zoe and the new stock control system telling you what's in stock and whats not added to this has brought us right up to speed with the competion

All of these things are now functioning really well and we are all starting to get a bit of a life back now. All of the 2012 winter products are already in the warehouse with a few brands still left to deliver and the shops are starting to get full of shiny new skis and snowboards and crisp new clothing for the season ahead. We'll start to bing you some reviews on products here on the blog over the next few weeks

Well, spring time is upon us and as usual there is a lot happening around the company.

The shrewsbury shop has had a minor re-fit to accomodate some of the new product lines that we are doing for summer. Alex has been hard at work with a lot of very noisel tools fitting new wall fixtures etc and generally making a lot of mess around the place - but he is now finished at last and the place looks great! New products include Skateboards, more wetsuits than ever including suits from Billabong and O'Neill, Von zipper glasses and DC clothing

Both shops have gone heavy in to skateboarding for the summer with large ranges arriving from all of the major skatebrands

The Chester shop is now proudly boasting a huge range of Oakley Sunglasses with prices as low as £69.99, a great new skate display and more wetsuits than ever from Billabong and O'neill

.....but it wasn't the ocean that nearly did this - it was the amount of Guiness we drank!!! Forgot to mention the other day that it was also a stag do we were on so as you can imagine it got a bit messy!!!

Surf Trip to Easky, County Sligo, Ireland

I have got bloody lucky with a little trip we have planned for this weekend to the Emerald Isle surfing, Golfing and Guiness-ing with seven other north Wales based surfers.

As you can tell from the image is forcast to be pumping, with good size swell, Light offshore winds and the sun is even going to be out. I have probably spoken to soon now!!!!

Keep an eye out on Wednesday as I'll post some of the best pics on here - you might think this is just a mid-week jolly but we like to call it research / board testing!!!

Hopefully you all enjoyed the same good weather that we did for the Easter bank holiday in the Midalnds and the North west and some of us even managed to get a very summer feeling surf in over the weekend in Wales, but with the cold water and full wetsuits being worn there are some very interesting tan lines around the neck area in the office this week.

Burton Emblem snowboard socks Product Review

At the end of the day, a sock is a sock, but Burton socks are different. It provides support under the arch of your foot, and across the top of your foot over the ankle, as well as providing extra padding on your shins.
These Burton socks kept my feet warm and dry, whilst wicking away sweat, and made my feet look good in the process.

Burton Bullet Tool Product Review

I don’t know any snowboarder who doesn’t own a burton bullet tool, the single most useful tool, that’s idiot proof.
It’s got a screw driver, with four different heads, a small spanner and an arm to give you more leverage whilst fitting comfortably into your coat jacket. I must have used my burton bullet tool every day, to make minor adjustments depending on the snow conditions.
If you haven’t already got one, get one!

Burton super pipe gloves Product Review

There’s nothing worse than having to take your gloves off in the minuses to adjust your bindings or re-tighten your boot laces: Enter Burton super pipe gloves.
Although these gloves say super pipe they can be used anywhere, I used them on piste, off piste, in the park and for après ski. They keep your hands warm, and wick away sweat from your palms, as well as being well ventilated.
As the superpipe gloves fit close to your hand it means you get great dexterity which helps if anything goes tits up with your board on the mountain.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll be carrying your Burton Bullet tool with you, and the super pipe gloves, enable you to keep your gloves on, whilst fixing your gear.

Burton Moto snowboard boots Product Review

The Burton Moto is an intermediate level snowboard boot, aimed more at all mountain freestyle riders as they are a softer, and more comfortable boot than the stiffer free ride boots.
Year in I’ve used Burton Moto snowboard boots as they are comfortable and give a relaxed fit, as well as keeping your feet toasty. With the speedzone laces on the inner boot and outer shell, it makes getting your boots on super quick and easy.
After riding a full day, either on the slopes or in the park, I just keep my boots on, and enjoyed some après ski, so all in all a very good versatile boot, at a great price.

The single best thing about Burton bindings above other bindings is the Cap strap. This piece of genius tech means that you get so much more response in your transitions from toe to heel.
The Burton Custom bindings, for me provided me with all day comfort and response at a great price, and happen to be the binding of choice for Shaun white, which can’t be a bad thing.
I would definatly recommend the Burton Custom bindings to anyone who enjoys all mountain freestyle riding, as the bindings are forgiving and give great support, as well as being easy on the wallet.

Burton Dominant Product Review

I bought my Burton dominant snowboard because it’s aimed at an intermediate rider who wants an all mountain freestyle board that can handle itself in the park. The dominant handles perfectly on groomed piste, and when I fancied hitting the park, it’s awesome for rails, boxes and jumps.
As it’s a super soft board, with twin tipped, directional flex, it makes it real easy to ride switch and go bigger of jumps with huge pop in the tail,
I found it really easy to progress to harder piste and carving turns, whilst it still remains the best board I’ve tried in the park. Its not a specific powder so if you enjoy back country riding then this boards not for you, however if there’s a few feet of powder just off the beaten track, the Burton Dominant will thrash about with the best of them.

Product Review - Scott 2009 Mens Corkscrew Jacket

Scott were incredibly kind and kitted some of out this winter in their new range of LTD Gore-tex ski jackets. The difference with their LTD range is that the Gore fabric isn't bonded to the inner part of the outer fabric as it is on all other jackets, it is bonded to the outer part of the jackets liner allowing the deigners of these jackets to be more elaborate in their design instead of being limited as to where they can place zips, vents etc as other brands jackets are.

I used this jacket in Tignes (France) several times this winter in conditions from -25 to +10 and it perfomed amazingly well as you would expect for a jacket worth nearly £250. I got a lot of comments from people on and off the mountain about how nice it looked (skiers and snowboarders). I think the overriding factor about the corkscrew jacket is it's versitility in all temperatures. I only had to vary the amount of layers by one piece between -25 to +10. To buy this item would be money well spent

Product Review - O'Shea 6'4" EPS Epoxy Fish Surfboards

This board goes incredibly well in all size waves up to 4ft and in really small weak surf makes getting into the wave really easy. I swapped to one of these for the summer from a standard 6'2" thruster simply to gain more float and bouyancy in typical British summer surf. I found that I was instantly getting into loads more waves and would imaging this would be a great board for someone also looking to get their first shortboard as it is super stable when getting to your feet. I have surfed it in solid 4 foot and it is maybe a bit under gunned but still went well enough. One major benefit is how tough the epoxy material is. Have had the board a few months now and it still looks brand new - I can highly recommend this to anyone who suits either of the two above descriptions. I am 5'8" and 12.5 stone if that helps anyone with whether or not they may need to go for the 6'6" or 6'8" versions.
